Sibelius will not open on Mac: how to fix it

Short answer. When Sibelius will not open on a Mac, it is almost always stuck on the audio plugin scan it runs at launch, hanging on a bad or heavy plugin. Why Sibelius will not open

It stalls in the launch plugin scan. When you launch Sibelius it scans the audio plugins installed on your Mac before it finishes loading, in the step it labels initializing playback system. If one plugin is incompatible, corrupted, or slow, the scan stalls and Sibelius never gets past the splash screen. The more plugins you have, the more likely one of them is the culprit. This is the same root cause whether Sibelius hangs or quits at once, on versions from 7.5 to 2026.

Common causes on a Mac

A few problems are specific to macOS and account for most cases where Sibelius simply will not open:

On Apple Silicon, a VST3 built only for Intel, or a stale copy left over from before you moved Macs.
A newly installed plugin still held for a security check, which stalls validation on first launch.
The bundled playback engine left in a bad state after a Sibelius or macOS update.
Out of date Playback Configurations carried over from an earlier version.

Sibelius First does not load third party VST plugins, so on First the cause is usually the bundled engine or a notation plugin rather than an audio effect.

Skip Avid's rename trick

Avid's support answer is to rename your whole system plugin folder. It gets Sibelius open, but Logic, GarageBand and Pro Tools then lose those plugins too. It is a fix users keep running into:

Disabling only the formats Sibelius scans, and keeping your playback engine, gets the same result without breaking the rest of your studio.

Fix it by hand (slow)

You can disable plugins manually by moving them out of the folders Sibelius scans. This works, but it is tedious and easy to get wrong on a big library.

Quit Sibelius.
Open the plugin folders in Finder: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (AU), /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3.
Move recently installed or suspect plugins to a temporary folder on your Desktop.
Open Sibelius. If it launches, add plugins back a few at a time until you find the one that breaks it.
Leave the bad plugin out, or update it from the maker.
