Sibelius stuck scanning plugins: how to fix it

Short answer. If Sibelius freezes on the plugin scan at launch, with the progress bar stuck on one plugin, that plugin is failing to load. Disable it and Sibelius finishes scanning and opens. Why Sibelius gets stuck scanning plugins

One plugin the scan cannot get past. Sibelius scans every audio plugin on your Mac at launch, in the step it labels initializing playback system, so it can use them for playback. When the progress bar stops on a plugin, that plugin is incompatible, corrupted, or slow to load, and the scan cannot move on. A working library can run into the thousands of plugin files, on versions from Sibelius 7.5 to 2026, so the odds that one stalls the scan climb with every install.

The plugin it stops on is your suspect

A stall is easier to diagnose than a silent crash, because Sibelius usually shows the name of the plugin it is checking when it freezes. That name is your prime suspect. Common ones include large sample instruments such as Kontakt that are slow to validate, copy protected plugins that wait on a server that never answers, and the bundled playback engine when it is left in a bad state.

You can act on the name and remove that one plugin, or skip the detective work and disable every effect plugin at once, then re-enable in batches.

Fix it by hand (slow)

You can disable plugins manually by moving them out of the folders Sibelius scans. This works, but it is tedious and easy to get wrong on a big library.

  1. Quit Sibelius.
  2. Open the plugin folders in Finder: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (AU), /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3.
  3. Move recently installed or suspect plugins to a temporary folder on your Desktop.
  4. Open Sibelius. If it launches, add plugins back a few at a time until you find the one that breaks it.
  5. Leave the bad plugin out, or update it from the maker.
