Sibelius slow to open: how to make it start faster

Short answer. Sibelius is slow to open when a large plugin library drags out the audio plugin scan it runs at launch. You do not need every plugin for scorewriting, so trimming the scan makes Sibelius start much faster. Why Sibelius is slow to open

A big library drags out the launch scan. At launch Sibelius scans the audio plugins installed on your Mac, in the step it labels initializing playback system. A working library often runs into the thousands of plugin files, and Sibelius scans them all on every launch, on versions from 7.5 to 2026. Every plugin adds time to that scan, and a few heavy ones can add a lot. For scorewriting you only need your playback engine, so most of the scan is time you can avoid.

What drags the scan out

Slow is a different problem from a crash. Here nothing is broken, there is just too much to scan. The biggest factors:

A very large library, often thousands of plugins built up over years.
Heavy sample based instruments such as large Kontakt libraries, which take the longest to validate.
Plugins that re-check their license or content on every launch.

None of these matter for writing a score. Sibelius only needs its playback engine to hear your music, so the rest of the scan is pure waiting.

Fix it by hand (slow)

You can disable plugins manually by moving them out of the folders Sibelius scans. This works, but it is tedious and easy to get wrong on a big library.

Quit Sibelius.
Open the plugin folders in Finder: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (AU), /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3.
Move the plugins you do not need for playback to a temporary folder on your Desktop.
Open Sibelius. It scans fewer plugins, so it starts faster.
Move plugins back when you need them in your DAW.

Fix it in one click (fast)
